What is VAT Exemption?
If you’re disabled or have a long-term illness, you will not be charged VAT on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use. You will also not be charged VAT on:
- the installation and any extra work needed as part of this
- repairs or maintenance
- spare parts or accessories
If you have a long-term illness or are disabled, you don’t have to pay VAT on certain goods and services that you buy in the UK.
In general the equipment covered by this scheme are things that are of practical help to you because of your illness or disability.
Look out for the VAT Exempt logo on products when browsing the site. All products showing this logo are listed with 0% VAT and eligible for zero-rated VAT.
If you are in any doubt as to whether you are eligible to receive goods or services zero-rated for VAT, you should consult Notice 701/7 VAT reliefs for disabled people or the HMRC National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000.
What counts as a long-term illness or disabled?
For VAT purposes, you have a long-term illness or are disabled if you meet any of the following conditions:
- you have a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon your ability to carry out everyday activities.
- you have a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes.
- you are terminally ill.
Therefore, you don’t qualify if you are elderly but otherwise able-bodied, or if you’re only temporarily disabled or incapacitated.
You don’t have to buy the goods in person. If your parent, guardian, wife or husband buys the goods and services for you, you will not be charged VAT.
What counts as personal or domestic use?
⦁ Personal or domestic use means that the goods or services are supplied for your own private use, rather than for business purposes.
Delivery and Installation
If required, we offer a delivery and installation service across the UK for all our safety kits and individual products. Our experienced team will carry out the fitting within a day, ensuring there is no mess or waste left behind. For further information, please see our FAQs or get in touch with our Customer Services team.
Installation is subject to the suitability of the surfaces and structure of the room and walls in case of damage to the surface on which the products are fitted or reduction in the safe use or function of the product.
On the arrival of the fitters, if the customer decides that they no longer wish the product to be installed, the cost of the product will be refunded but NOT the installation fee. When the installation has been fitted, all complaints/refund requests fall under our returns policy, warranty or guarantee.
The installation fee is calculated based on items and location. There is a base fee of £80 for installation and £40 per item or a set cost for each safety kit, but some locations may require additional travel costs. For more information, you can use our Interactive map below.

VAT Relief
Individuals who are chronically sick or disabled and whose products are for personal use, or charities where the products are made available to a disabled person for their own personal/domestic use, may be eligible for VAT Relief.
To qualify for VAT Relief you must ensure that the VAT Relief checkboxes are selected at checkout and state your precise medical condition. Assuming you meet the criteria, VAT will not be added (unless a particular product has compulsory VAT).
Orders that are received without ticked exemption will incur the VAT charge, which will be clearly stated on your online checkout.
Completed VAT Relief Declarations by customers are accepted as prima facie evidence by the Company that a valid medical condition exists for exemption under The VAT Act, and no VAT will be charged on the goods purchased. If at a later date, HMRC disputes the validity of the medical condition, you will be liable to pay the appropriate VAT that should have been applied. Under these circumstances, Age Care Shop reserves the right to demand that you pay the VAT amount that is due.
The VAT/sales tax shown in the basket and our checkout is meant as a guide. The final VAT/sales tax amount will be shown on the printed invoice received with your items.

Guarantee and Warranty
If products are faulty
It’s our legal duty to supply products that are fit for purpose and meet satisfactory quality requirements.
As a customer, it’s your legal right to receive either a refund, repair or replacement for products that are faulty or not what you expected as per the Consumer Rights Act.
Age Care Shop’s Guarantee and Warranty provides coverage only if you maintain or use the product as directed. For example, our warranty covers only personal uses – as opposed to business uses – of the product. If there are multiple users of the product, we would not cover any product faults. Please note that if you have made any modifications to the product, this invalidates the manufacturer’s warranty and Age Care Shop’s Warranty and Guarantee.
You can get advice regarding your legal rights from your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Trading Standards office. Nothing in these terms will affect your legal rights.
Guarantee
If you selected to have your product(s) installed by Age Care Shop, the products and installation falls under our guarantee. If within the period of 12 months after the installation date you discover a fault with the products or fittings, you may:
- Choose to receive a full refund for the product
- Arrange for our professional fittings team to repair or replace the item at no extra cost
To submit a claim, you may be asked for photographic evidence of the fault where applicable. If you fail to do so, or if Age Care Shop should discover the fault was the result of inappropriate usage, they reserve the right to refuse a requested claim.
If you discover a fault with the product(s) after 12 months, Age Care Shop is no longer obligated to operate under its fittings Guarantee, and you are not entitled to compensation. However, at a cost, you can arrange for Age Care Shop to repair or replace the item.
Please note our guarantee only covers domestic use; items for use in commercial properties may not be covered.
Warranty
If you order a product(s) and have them delivered, they will be subject to our warranty. If within the period of 12 months after delivery you discover a fault with the product(s) unconnected to a fault with its fittings, you are entitled to a full refund. This does not include a professional fittings fee.
To submit a claim, you may be asked for photographic evidence of the fault where applicable. If you fail to do so, or if Age Care Shop should discover the fault was the result of inappropriate usage, they reserve the right to refuse a requested claim.
Please note our Warranty only covers domestic use; items for use in commercial properties may not be covered.
Manufacturer’s Warranty
The manufacturers will supply a warranty in addition to your rights under the Sale of Goods Act. You will receive a 1-year warranty which covers parts and labour (some exceptions will apply; please refer to the individual owner’s manual). If an engineer call out is required, a charge will be made in advance which will be refundable if a manufacturing fault is confirmed.
